Begin with the Sold Package, Then Work Backward
A yogurt cup, deli tub, thermoformed tray, condiment cup, and reusable food container may all be called “plastic containers,” but they behave differently on a coding line. Rim geometry, taper, nesting, lidding film, grease, refrigeration, hot fill, condensation, and sleeve or label placement determine where a code can live.
Photograph the package as consumers see it. Mark the required viewing panel, legal information, label area, seal, peel tab, rim, stacking contact, and any transparent window. The coding plan should preserve those functions and make the lot or expiry data easy to find.

Before filling: cleaner mechanics, earlier data
An empty cup or tub can be held in a controlled nest and may be easier to keep dry. However, the final expiry or batch data must already be known, and the code must survive denesting, filling, sealing, and packing. If containers are stacked after printing, test set-off under realistic pressure and time.
After filling: correct product context, harder surface
Filled containers provide the final batch context but can flex, carry product residue, or arrive warm, cold, or wet. The product may support the wall unevenly. A fixture must not squeeze the package, disturb the seal, or push product toward the code zone.
After sealing: final package, shortest access window
The container is complete, but lid stock, overwrap, label application, case packing, and chill tunnels can create immediate contact. Confirm whether the variable code belongs on the rigid body, lidding film, label, or secondary packaging, and who owns verification for that component.
Rework or short-run offline coding: flexible, operator-dependent
A handheld printer can be useful for low-volume SKUs, export variations, rework, and contingency production. Use a nest, guide, approved message template, first-piece check, and controlled release process. The buyer should validate throughput across real operators rather than extrapolating from one demonstration.
Draw Three Boundaries on the Container
1. Food-contact boundary. Identify surfaces that directly contact food, the seal interface, and any plausible set-off or migration path. Do not print inside or across a food-contact/seal area without written use-specific approval.
2. Mechanical boundary. Mark rims, stacking lugs, denester contact, guide rails, heat-seal zones, peel tabs, labels, sleeves, and carton contact.
3. Readable-code boundary. Reserve a stable, visible, high-contrast area large enough for the required text or symbol and its clear space.
These boundaries often leave a smaller code zone than the artwork suggests. Resolve the conflict before testing. Moving the code a fraction of an inch can remove a contact path, improve contrast, or keep ink away from a seal.
Build the Qualification Around the Product Life
Cold, Moisture, Oil, and Heat Change Different Variables
1. Condensation: A wet film can block direct contact between ink and plastic. Record surface temperature and when moisture first appears; printing earlier in the process may be more reliable than trying to print through water.
2. Oil or food residue: Residue can reduce adhesion and contaminate the printer or fixture. Improve process containment and move the code zone rather than normalizing a dirty surface.
3. Hot fill or sealing heat: Heat can change the container shape, coating, ink appearance, and time to contact. Test after the actual thermal cycle.
4. Freezing and flexing: Plastic stiffness and package shape can change. Inspect after temperature cycling and handling, not only while the container is warm and flat.
5. Washdown or cleaner: Define the exact chemical, concentration, dwell, temperature, and mechanical action. Review compatibility and safety documentation before testing.
Use a Release Plan, Not a One-Time Sample
Approve a traceable recipe: container supplier and specification, ink and cartridge lot, printer/model, message revision, code zone, fixture, print stage, settings, environment, dry window, and test method. Set requalification triggers for material supplier changes, recycled-content changes, coatings, ink substitutions, new fill temperatures, line-speed changes, and new cleaning chemicals.
