Write the Acceptance Specification Before Designing the Code
The printer cannot decide what the symbol means. The brand owner, customer, retailer, regulator, or traceability system must define the data carrier, encoded data, syntax, human-readable text, print location, verification method, and minimum grade or pass rule. If the code participates in a GS1 process, use the applicable GS1 General Specifications and implementation guideline rather than a generic QR-code generator.
The Six-Gate Print-to-Verification Pipeline
Gate 1 - Data integrity
Connect the code to an approved data source or controlled template. Lock fixed fields. Validate date formats, check digits, serial uniqueness, database lookups, and rollover behavior. A perfectly printed symbol with wrong data is a traceability failure.
Gate 2 - Digital symbol construction
Generate the symbol with software appropriate to the required standard. Do not resize a raster image arbitrarily, stretch it, crop the quiet zone, or place text and graphics inside required clear space. Preserve square modules for 2D codes and correct bar/space relationships for 1D symbols.
Gate 3 - Printer resolution and message setup
Confirm the printer can reproduce the chosen module or bar width with operating margin. Set print direction, speed range, darkness/ink density, nozzle condition, and standoff. More ink is not automatically better: excessive gain can close small spaces or cause adjacent modules to merge.
Gate 4 - Plastic surface and contrast
Qualify ink adhesion and drying on the actual outside layer, coating, color, and finish. Clear or dark packaging may require an approved light background panel or different artwork strategy. Reflections, transparency, metallic effects, and colored backgrounds can reduce effective contrast for the scanner.
Gate 5 - Final-package geometry
Print placement must survive curvature, seams, folds, gussets, shrinking, labels, embossing, cap rotation, and product fill. GS1 guidance identifies inadequate positioning on cylindrical packs and deterioration from wrinkles, welding, flecks, and blots as common quality risks. Verify after all relevant package-forming steps.
Gate 6 - Formal verification and process monitoring
Use a standards-conforming verifier and the correct test method for the symbol and application. Record the report, sample identity, settings, and final-pack condition. Then define in-process checks and re-verification triggers; do not replace formal verification with a scanner beep.

Rigid bottles and tubs
Avoid compound curves, heavy embossing, label edges, and guide-rail contact. On cylindrical surfaces, follow the symbol-specific placement rules and test the full range of scanner approach angles. A larger symbol on a calmer panel is often more robust than a small symbol squeezed into a highly curved area.
Flexible bags and pouches
Verify the filled and sealed pack. Keep the symbol away from gussets, zipper hardware, heat seals, wrinkles, and high-flex zones. Control backing and film tension during printing so modules do not stretch or wave.
Caps, lids, and closures
A crown may appear flat but can contain recesses, embossing, gloss, or capper-contact marks. Confirm orientation and final visibility after capping. Small diameters can leave too little room for the specified symbol and quiet zone; do not shrink below the application requirement.

When Handheld Printing Is a Good Fit
A handheld inkjet printer can fit short runs, warehouse or contract-packing work, rework, oversize packages, and variable-location jobs when the package can be supported and the operator’s motion controlled. Use a guide, fixture, or registration edge for machine-readable codes. Validate across representative operators and the expected working pace.
For continuous high-speed film, closures, or conveyor packaging, an integrated coder with controlled triggering, encoder input, fixed standoff, inspection, and reject logic may provide more process capability. The choice should follow the verification target and throughput, not the desire to use one tool everywhere.
Build a Verification Sampling Plan
1. Approve setup samples. Verify coded packages produced with the final artwork, surface, ink, printer, settings, and geometry.
2. Sample across time. Include start-up, steady-state, stops/restarts, speed changes, cartridge change, and end-of-run conditions.
3. Sample across variation. Cover substrate lots, colors, package sizes, operators, cavities, lanes, and environmental ranges that matter.
4. Define reaction rules. State when to stop, segregate product, correct the process, reprint, reverify, and document disposition.
5. Retain traceable evidence. Link verification reports and physical/photo samples to job, material, ink, printer, message revision, date, and operator.

Buyer FAQs
Why does a QR code scan on screen but fail after printing?
Printing introduces physical module size, ink spread, missing nozzles, contrast, surface reflection, standoff, motion, quiet-zone, and package-distortion limits that do not exist on a screen. Design and verify the printed final pack, not the digital preview.
Is error correction enough to fix a poor QR code?
No. Error correction can help decode some damaged data, but it does not excuse undersized modules, missing quiet zones, severe distortion, low contrast, incorrect data, or a process that is not controlled. Meet the applicable construction and quality requirements.
Can we approve quality with several warehouse scanners?
Scanner trials are useful for functional compatibility, but they do not provide a standardized quality grade. Use the applicable verifier and method, then supplement with intended-use scanner testing.
