Why a Product Name Is Not Enough
“Plastic bottle,” “carton,” and “metal part” describe categories, not printing conditions. A carton may be uncoated and absorbent or laminated and less absorbent. A plastic package may be rigid, flexible, matte, glossy, treated, or contaminated by release agents. A metal part may be bare, painted, anodized, oily, dusty, or already assembled into a shape that restricts printer movement.

Send the Message, Not Just the Message Type
A request that says “we print dates and QR codes” still leaves the supplier with critical unknowns. A date can be one line or part of a multi-line traceability block. A QR code can be small or large, fixed or variable, and surrounded by text or graphics. Those differences change the required print area, file preparation, and workflow.
Send the complete mark in the order it should appear. Include fixed wording, variable fields, punctuation, line breaks, logo position, barcode or 2D code type, and any human-readable text. If the layout is not final, send a realistic draft using the longest expected data, not the shortest sample.
Use the Longest-Data Rule
Variable information should be tested and quoted at its maximum realistic length. A serial number that grows from six to twelve characters, a product name that changes by SKU, or a destination code that includes extra characters can alter the layout.
